The 50th anniversary of the beginning of operations at the Hanford Site will be celebrated in 1994. The 560-square-mile Hanford reservation is approximately 120 miles south of Spokane, Washington, and 220 miles southeast of Seattle, Washington. The Hanford Site was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Du Pont Corporation in 1943 to produce plutonium (Pu) for nuclear weapons in support of the World War II effort. The facility was very successful; within two years after its formation, Hanford had supplied the Pu used for the bomb dropped on Nagasaki in World War II. Plutonium production at Hanford continued after the war until January 1987 when the last production reactor ceased operation at the Hanford Site. As a result of Pu production, large quantities of mixed radioactive waste were generated. Major chemical processing facilities were constructed to reprocess fuel from nine production reactors, and recover enriched uranium (U), radioactive cesium (Cs) and strontium (Sr). Reprocessing and other waste management operations created a further quantity of radioactive mixed wastes, much of which is stored in underground tanks. Three major processes led to a variety of chemical processing facilities and waste types. Both inorganic- and organic-containing wastes were produced and are being stored at Hanford. In this study, fast atom bombardment (FAB) was applied to the analysis and identification of synthesized macrocyclic ligands used to complex radionuclides.
