This paper describes the first study of this type of composite in which the failure mode is clearly identified by scanning electron microscopy, and the strength of the matrix alloy is obtained from nanoindentation. Two composites were studied: an aluminum-silicon alloy containing either Saffil or Kaowool fibers. It is shown that when the failure mode and matrix strength are fully characterized, the calculated values of tensile strength are in excellent agreement with the experimental ones.
