Use of the Davydov--Chaban model for the description of scattering of fast neutrons by even--even nuclei

We use the coupled-channel method to describe neutron scattering within the framework of a model of a nonaxial rotator soft in ..beta.. vibrations. We analyze the role of the higher approximations in powers of the deformation parameter in the description of the angular distributions of the scattered neutrons. For the /sup 56/Fe nucleus we calculate numerically the differential cross sections for elastic and inelastic scattering with excitation of the lowest states of the scattering in the energy range 1.5--20.0 MeV of the incident neutrons. We determine the shape parameters ..gamma.. and ..mu.. of the nucleus and also the parameters of the neutron--nucleus nonspherical optical potential and of the nuclear deformation ..beta../sub 0/.
