Transport of pollutants along the western shore of lake michigan

Journal Article · · J. Air Pollut. Control Assoc.; (United States)
Oxidant production and transport along the western shore of Lake Michigan are discussed. Air quality and meteorological data were collected in this area during the summers of l976-78 using a ground-based laboratory and an instrumented aircraft. Ozone, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, halocarbons, and numerous meteorological parameters were monitored continuously. Primary emissions from the Chicago and Milwaukee areas drift in northeasterly direction over the lake during morning hours. Secondary pollutants are produced in the airmass over the lake and advected onshore in the afternoon by lake winds.
