While most of the late transition atomic metal ions are unreactive with C{sub 2}H{sub 4}, the early transition atomic metal ions react by dehydrogenation. Of these, Nb{sup +} is the most reactive, sequentially dehydrogenating up to six ethylene molecules to generate Nb(C{sub 2}H{sub 2}){sub n}{sup +} (n=1=6). In this case, the ligands on Nb{sup +} are believed to be coupled. Here, the authors extend this work to the reactions of ethylene with Nb{sub n}{sup +}, as n goes from 1 to 6. The focus is on determining reaction pathways and learning something about the bonding between the ligand and the metal center in the product ions. The product ion structures are probed by collision-induced-dissociation (CID) and ion/molecule reactions.
