The expansion of the form factors of one- and two-nucleon transfer reactions with respect to the Sturm-Liouville functions corresponding to the Woods-Saxon potential is discussed. Completeness and the convergence of the expansion as r..-->..infinity are elucidated. The theory of direct nucleon-transfer reactions is briefly presented, special attention being paid to the role of the form factor. A number of applications of the method, to single-particle transfers to deformed nuclei and two-particle transfers to spherical nuclei, are discussed. The advantages of the Sturm-Liouville method are revealed by a comparison with the exact expression for the asymptotic behavior of the form factors and with other methods of calculation.
