Superconductor-to-insulator transition in the Bi/sub 2/Sr/sub 3-x/Y/sub x/Cu/sub 2/O/sub 8+y/

Journal Article · · J. Solid State Chem.; (United States)
The compositions Bi/sub 2/Sr/sub 3-x/Y/sub x/Cu/sub 2/O/sub 8/ have been prepared with the structure of superconducting Bi/sub 2/Sr/sub 3-x/Ca/sub x/Cu/sub 2/O/sub 8/. The range of x in B/sub 2/Sr/sub 3-x/Y/sub x/Cu/sub 2/O/sub 8/ is roughly 0.2 to 1.0 and chemical analysis shows that the Cu/sup III/ concentration increases with decreasing x. The compositions are superconducting (T/sub c/ /approximately/ 65-72 K) for x = /approximately/ 0.2 to 0.4. Insulating behavior is observed in the region from x = 0.5 to 1.0. This insulating region would not be expected if the Bi 6p band overlapped the Fermi level, as indicated by recent band structure calculations for Bi/sub 2/Sr/sub 2/CaCu/sub 2/O/sub 8/.
