Formation of the 1-chloro-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexamethylbenzenonium carbocation in the reaction of hexamethylbenzene with the RSO/sub 2/Cl-Lewis acid system and substitution of the chlorine in this ion by hydrogen

It was established that the action of the C/sub 6/H/sub 5/SO/sub 2/Cl-AlCl/sub 3/(AlBr/sub 3/), p-CH/sub 3/C/sub 6/H/sub 4/SO/sub 2/Cl-AlCl/sub 3/(AlBr/sub 3/), and p-CH/sub 3/C/sub 6/H/sub 4/SO/sub 2/F-AlCl/sub 3/ systems in methylene chloride and also of the p-CH/sub 3/C/sub 6/H/sub 4/SO/sub 2/F-SbF/sub 5/ system in sulfuryl fluorochloride on hexamethylbenzene leads not to the corresponding 1-arylsulfonyl-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexamethylbenzenonium ions but to the 1-chloro-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexamethylbenzenonium ion. It was found that in this cation, generated by the action of systems of the ArSO/sub 2/Hlg-AlHlg/sub 3/ type on hexamethylbenzene, a chlorine atom is substituted by hydrogen by the action of atmospheric moisture.
