Lasers in chemistry

David Andrews has created an introductory textbook that the author found enjoyable to read because of both its style and its content. The book provides a concise overview of lasers and their uses in chemistry. One of its attractive features is that information on many of the topics is available elsewhere only in a form that assumes the reader already has an advanced scientific or technical background. The author has assembled and presented these subjects and others in a readable and organized manner for anyone who is acquainted with the material covered in first-year undergraduate courses in chemistry and physics. There are relatively few mathematical equations, and only a half-dozen of them even require introductory calculus for total comprehension. There are many helpful figures and diagrams. Because of the variety and complexity of lasers, about one-third of the book is devoted to the principles of lasers and the special properties of their beams. Even though some of the topics are covered only in one paragraph, overall coverage in this part is comprehensive. This is an excellent introduction to lasers.
