Russia's steadily expanding Far North petroleum exploration program has begun to pay substantial dividends. The first of the USSR supergiant gas fields near the Arctic Circle in W. Siberia has gone into commercial production. The area's output will rise sharply through the 1980's, when it is slated to become the nation's largest source of gas, surpassing the Soviet Central Asia area. Meanwhile, farther to the east, in the transitional region between W. and central Siberia, Russia will soon finish looping its first trans-Arctic gas pipeline. The initial 170-mile link, built above the permanently frozen ground on flexible pylons, was completed in 1969. It runs from the Messoyakhskoye field west of the Yenisei River to the important mining center of Norilsk east of the Yenisei. A new gas field--the sixth and largest in the Messoyakhskoye area--was found during July about 60 miles west of the Yenisei River port of Dudinka. The discovery well gages 88 MMcfd, a volume equal to that reported at the best fields in Tyumen Province, whose border is just west of the latest Krasnoyarsk Territory strike. Exploration for Arctic and sub-Arctic petroleum is active on both sides of the Ural Mt. in the NE. corner of European Russia as well as in W. Siberia. The Soviets also have begun large-scale geophysical work off shore in the Barents and Kara seas.
