Observation of M1 strength by the inelastic scattering of 200-MeV protons

A new resonance has been observed at very forward angles in the inelastic scattering of 200-MeV protons on /sup 90/Zr, /sup 92/Zr, and /sup 94/Zr at an excitation energy around 8.8 MeV in each target. The excitation energy, angular distribution, and strength of this state suggests that it corresponds to the previously unseen gaint M1 transition in the zirconium isotopes.
