Production of silicon nitride/silicon carbide fibrous composites using polysilazanes as pre-ceramic binders

Conference · · Ceramic Engineering and Science Proceedings; (USA)
OSTI ID:6189767
Advanced ceramic composites having a reaction-bonded silicon nitride (RBSN) matrix, derived from submicron silicon powders and various SiC fiber reinforcements, are discussed. The addition of a preceramic binder (i.e., a polysilazane copolymer) improved the density and changed some of the other properties of these composites, e.g., processability, porosity, morphology, and crystallinity of the product. The preliminary results indicated that a stabilization step is needed to obtain acceptable yield. The polysilazanes were pyrolyzed in a tube furnace under a flow of nitrogen, ramping to 800 deg at 1 deg/min. The reaction-bonding experiments were performed in a computer-controlled nitriding system, ramping from 1100 deg to 1200 deg at 1/2 deg/min. 5 refs.
