Observations of localized grain boundary dislocations in series of (001) and (110) symmetrical tilt boundaries in aluminum

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6187875
The present results demonstrate the existence of localized GBDs in a number of near low-..sigma.. <100> and <110> symmetric tilt boundaries in Al. These results suggest that extensive hierarchies of localized GBD structures exist in these series of boundaries similar to those found recently (3) in (001) symmetric tilt boundaries in Au. Presumably these additional structures could be revealed by further careful microscopy carried out on a wider sampling of boundaries. The results are consistent with the structural unit/GBD description of these boundaries. They are also consistent eith calculations for these symmetric boundaries which predict localized perfect GBDs having the shortest possible Burgers vectors normal to the boundary (and which also do not produce steps in the boundary).
