We show that a major part of the neutron and charged-fragment multiplicity distributions measured in the collision of [sup 136]Xe on [sup 209]Bi at an incident energy of 28.2[ital A] MeV can be reproduced by assuming that the colliding nuclei decay independently after a highly dissipative process.
