Controlled open burning in the San Francisco Bay Area

Journal Article · · J. Air Pollut. Control Assoc.; (United States)
The history of open burning regulation in the Bay Area Air Pollution Control District is reviewed, and current policies are assessed. Open burning of agricultural waste in the District is decreasing through the development of alternate methods of disposal, and through the loss of agricultural land to urbanization. Closer cooperation between regulators and farmers is moving toward minimizing complaints by burning on days of good atmospheric dilution of the pollutants. Range brush control burns are continuing because no other method is practical at this time. It is hoped that the research projects now under way will provide a better means of orchard brush disposal. Stubble and slash burning need additional effort to handle the problems peculiar to each. As disposal methods are developed, tighter control methods will be imposed to provide a cleaner environment for living and the growing of crops. 3 references, 2 tables.
