Self-consistent random-phase--approximation calculations of muon capture rates

Total muon capture rates on nuclei are calculated for /sup 16/O and /sup 40/Ca. The distribution of muon capture strength is calculated using random-phase approximation and Tamm-Dancoff approximation methods in a response function approach. The random-phase--approximation calculation is in excellent agreement with data.
