United States metallurgical coal industry: reserves, efficiency, outlook. [coking coal; USA]

Book ·
OSTI ID:6186078

There are some problems in determining the reserves of coking coal in the USA since some coal can be used as steam coal or with further cleaning and blending for making coke for blast furnaces. But the author's conclusion is that the reserves of premium grade metallurgical coal are not as large as commonly thought and may be only of the order of 20 to 40 years. Coke yields are 69 to 70% of the coal charge in by-product ovens. This is about 10% greater than the yield of bee-hive ovens most of which have been replaced. The requirements of coking coal are given. The book contains a considerable amount of data on coking coal production, reserves, market, prices, coke production, etc. often over a period of many years. (LTN)
