Spin observables in proton quasielastic scattering are calculated in a relativistic plane wave impulse approximation using relativistic mean field calculations for nuclear matter in a local density approximation. Results are compared to (p, p') data at 420 MeV on O and C and 290 MeV on Fe. The analyzing power and polarization are substantially reduced from free NN values by relativistic dynamics in good agreement with experiment. Polarization transfer coefficients S/sub s//sub '//sub s/ and D/sub l//sub '//sub l/ are predicted to be enhanced. The need for further theoretical calculations and experimental measurements of (p,n) spin observables is discussed. Finally, the effect of vacuum polarization on the longitudinal response in quasielastic electron scattering is discussed.
