Takula field, offshore Cabinda, Angola, West Africa

The Takula field is located approximately 40 km west-northwest of the Malongo terminal, Cabinda, Angola, in water depths of 50 to 75 m. An initial discovery well, drilled in 1971, tested 5600 b/d of 32/sup 0/ API oil from carbonates of the Lower Cretaceous. The initial discovery was made on a seismically defined horst structure associated with the opening of the South Atlantic. Subsequent delineation drilling indicated the potential for larger hydrocarbon accumulations in younger, predominantly clastic sediments deposited after the rifting phase. At Takula, this sequence is influenced by halokinesis and growth faulting, forming a large rollover anticline with an areal closure of approximately 53 km/sup 2/. Appraisal drilling proved the existence of a major oil accumulation in multiple reservoirs. Current production levels are approximately 110,000 b/d of 29/sup 0/ to 34/sup 0/ API oil. Total original oil in place is estimated at 1.6 billion bbl. To improve the recovery from the field, a water injection project is being studied for the major reservoir. This proposed project is being analyzed through the use of a detailed reservoir simulation model, incorporating revised structural interpretations based on 3-D seismic data, core studies, wireline log analyses, reservoir parameter mapping, and production history matching.
