Oil use by automobiles is central to any serious discussion of the future oil situation since cars and light trucks account for over 30% of US consumption. Government efforts to establish fuel economy ratings and promote fuel-efficient models helped set in motion a surge of fuel economy improvements. The rate at which vehicles are currently saving oil will produce the same amount of oil in four years as is estimated to be recoverable from the entire area off the coast of California. Consumer demand for larger vehicles and administration policies have slowed improvements recently, however. 1 figure.
