The FY 1985 budget request for the Department of Energy supports the Department's energy and national security missions in a strong and balanced manner. The budget for energy programs continues the Department's long standing commitment to support development of a mix of energy technologies which potentially can provide adequate supplies of energy at a reasonable cost. The Nation's energy security is enhanced through the continued development and fill of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, and the Department continues to carry out its responsibilities as a principal sponsor of basic research into the fundamentals of matter by requesting a substantial increase in funding for general science research activities. Finally, the budget request meets the Department's responsibility to support the national security mission of the Department of Defense through the development, testing, and production of nuclear weapons and materials.
