Zimbabwe has only one coal mine which is being expanded to produce 4,000,000 tons per year by surface and underground methods. The coal is partly steam coal and partly good coking coal of low ash content. The mining equipment used is described in considerable detail. Part of the coking coal is coked at the mine in a battery of 32 silica brick coke ovens. Coke and by-product production are given. There are important coal reserves in Zimbabwe estimated at 30,000,000,000 tons, of which 1,300,000,000 tons are recoverable by surface mining. (LTN)
