LIN's flue gas desulfurization process according to reaction mechanism

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6180914
This patent describes the improved flue gas desulfurization process which is effective for removing sulfur dioxide in the flue gas with a lime-bearing material in a fluidized lime reactor. The effectiveness of the process is due primarily to the presence of sulfur trioxide in the gas, the sulfur trioxide being generated in a catalytic converter and a bypass circuit transmitting a portion of the flue gas past the catalytic converter. Sulfur trioxide may also be directly injected by duct injection in order to enhance the removal of sulfur dioxide from flue gas in the fluidized lime reactor. In the initial phase, the duct injected sulfur trioxide efficiently raises the temperature of the lime-bearing particles from the exothermic reaction with lime, resulting in the establishment of the steep temperature and sulfur oxides gradients which induce an autogeneous conversion of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide.
