Mechanism for backward inelastic pd scattering

Backward inelastic pd scattering is studied in the reaction pd..-->..ppn for an incident-proton energy T/sub 0/approx. =1 GeV. The contributions of single and double elastic NN collisions to the invariant cross section for the reaction are analyzed. The invariant cross section for the protons scattered into the backward hemisphere with a large momentum, p> or approx. =0.2 GeV/c, is due primarily to ''triangle'' diagrams with single-pion exchange.
