British Gas Corp.'s improved auxiliary burner assembly for use in a slagging coal gasifier prevents blockage of the slag-tap orifice by solidified slag. An auxiliary lance burner head is positioned directly beneath the orifice with its flame port spaced at a predetermined distance from the bottom of the solidified slag. Ignition of the combustible gas mixture at the auxiliary burner head melts the bottom of the solidified-slag plug, and the progressive raising of the auxiliary burner flame in step with the rate of penetration maintains a region of optimum heat intensity at the roof of a cavity in the plug formed by the penetration, thereby eventually unblocking the orifice.
