Mild supercritical-gas extraction from low-rank coals: separation, spectroscopy, and composition of alkane products

Journal Article · · Sep. Sci. Technol.; (United States)

Alkane fractions of supercritical-gas (SRG) extracts of Turkish lignite were separated by silica-gel chromatography followed by 5 A molecular-sieve adsorption, yielding the branched cyclic alkane subfractions. Progress was monitored by gas-liquid chromatography and /sup 1/HNMR spectroscopy. Saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons identified by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry from one lignite include normals n-C/sub 13/ to n-C/sub 33/ inclusive, acrylic isoprenoids C/sub 18/, C/sub 19/, and C/sub 20/, and two C/sub 31/ pentacyclic (triterpane) and one (C/sub 15/) dicyclic cycloalkanes. The distributions of n-alkanes depend more on extraction conditions than do the distributions of isoprenoids and cycloalkanes. overall, batchwise SCG extraction of low-rank coals with toluene or tetrahydrofuran at about 350/sup 0/C appears to cause little thermolysis and can yield relatively large quantities of paraffinic hydrocarbons, representative of the original coals, and useful as geochemical markers.
