Emission modeling has long been a difficult, tedious and error-prone part of the air quality modeling process. There are a variety of problems using existing emission systems: managing large amounts of data (e.g. emission inventories); managing the execution of many programs to produce air quality model inputs from the inventories; and conducting quality assurance of the data in an efficient manner. MCNC-North Carolina Supercomputing Center created the Urban Airshed Model with Graphical User Interface and Decision Support (UAMGUIDES) was created as a prototype tool for alleviating these problems. The UAMGUIDES system includes the following major components: a point-and-click menu system, a visualization system based on the Application Visualization System (AVS), a preprocessor execution user interface, and a model performance evaluation system. The UAMGUIDES Emissions Preprocessor System (EPS) provides a user interface that: (1) assists with the execution of EPS Version 2.0 programs; (2) provides interactive visualizations for point, area, and link-based sources; and also for gridded emissions, and (3) manages and organizes the input and output data for EPS 2.0 programs. This paper describes the functionality of UAMGUIDES EPS and gives examples of how the software has helped specific users.
