Development of a gridded leaf biomass inventory for use in estimating biogenic emissions for urban airshed modeling

It is now well recognized that biogenic hydrocarbons, principally isoprene and monoterpenes, emitted from a wide range of natural, agricultural, and ornamental vegetation can play an important role in ozone formation. Moreover, the magnitude of biogenic hydrocarbon emissions can determine the relative efficacy of controlling volatile organic compounds (VOC) versus oxides of nitrogen (NO{sub x}) for ozone abatement in nonattainment airsheds. The purpose of this study was to produce a gridded biomass database for input to biogenic emission models such as the EPA-released UAM BEIS or BEIS-2 models. This paper reports the development of a gridded biomass database using information derived from satellite imagery and from limited field measurements of plant biomass and diversity in two southern California counties.
