This article deals with the optimization of manufacturing processes in petroleum refining and petrochemical plants through the use of computer-based process control and optimization technologies. Target values for refinery operation decision points are made with four issues in mind: (1) unit capacities and plant constraints, (2) product sulfur levels, (3) bulk properties (octane, end point, pour point, etc.), (4) economic maximization. Information for sound business decisions comes from integrated information systems, plant monitoring, and basic data collection. This information affects production planning and scheduling as well as plant optimization and simulation. The complete integration of these factors can lead to more efficient operation and greater profits.
