Detailed calculations of some nuclear processes occurring at the magnetic poles of a neutron star confirm the general properties of a model of electron-positron pair production described previously. Photohadronic absorption reactions in the electromagnetic showers formed by ultrarelativistic electrons incident on the stellar surface produce a flux of photons into the magnetosphere creating pairs at distances z
