The effect of distortions in the cross sections of the magnetic surfaces in a tokamak due to the finite plasma pressure on the excitation of Alfven waves by fusion ..cap alpha.. particles is studied. The growth rates for the instabilities due to trapped and untrapped ..cap alpha.. particles are derived. Gradient excitation and the excitation due to the deviation from a monotonic distribution function are studied. Higher harmonics of the resonants are present in the case of long-wavelength perturbations. The electron and ion damping rates of the Alfven waves are calculated; the distortion of the magnetic surfaces is taken into account. Stabilization conditions are derived.
