Reports on schemes for the reprocessing of spent fuel and final storage of radioactive waste published in Sweden this year seem to satisfy the conditions laid down by the coalition government in 1977. However, the Prime Minister is to have the final word on whether or not to accept the reports and permit resumption of the nuclear power program. The four nuclear power utilities have formed the Nuclear Fuel Safety Project (KBS) to meet the requirements of the Conditions Act which pertain to the handling and final storage of spent nuclear fuel or high-level waste. The accumulated quantities of spent fuel in tons of uranium from the operation of 6 or 13 reactors in Sweden (including unit 13 in 1986) is, in 1980, 380 or 420, in 1985, 870 or 1400 and in 1990, 1400 or 2700.
