VOC concentrations in the South Coast Air Basin (CA) following introduction of reformulated gasoline
- Desert Research Institute, Reno, NV (United States); and others
An ambient air quality study was carried out in the South Coast Air Basin (SoCAB), CA, in the Summer of 1995, following the introduction of the federal Phase I reformulated gasoline (RFG) program, and in the Summer of 1996, following the introduction of California`s Phase II RFG. Over 250 canister and DNPH-impregnated cartridge samples were collected during each sampling campaign at three sampling sites, two at downwind receptor sites (Burbank and Azusa) and one, at a source-dominated site, in downtown Los Angeles (North Main Street). In addition, one background site, in Santa Monica, was selected. These samples were analyzed for speciated volatile hydrocarbons (C{sub 2}-C{sub 12}), CH{sub 4}, oxygenated compounds such as MTBE, methanol and ethanol, and carbonyl compounds. The changes in concentrations of volatile organic compounds in the SoCAB observed from the first summer to the second are discussed.
