A review from 1985 on inelastic x-ray scattering including resonance phenomena begins with the following sentence {open_quotes}The development of intense tunable synchrotron radiation sources will undoubtedly stimulate the study of inelastic X-ray scattering by bound electrons in much the same way as the progress in laser technology has revived Raman scattering investigations in the optical region.{close_quotes} Indeed the development of synchrotron radiation (SR) sources (ESRF, ALS, APS, SPring-8, etc.) and technology has been impressive during the last ten years. The use of SR has contributed to our understanding of radiative and radiationless resonant Raman scattering (RRRRS) in the x-ray and ultraviolet [x(uv)] region and the field is rapidly expanding.
