Reactor and method for hydrocracking carbonaceous material
Patent

OSTI ID:6175530
This improved coal-conversion process provides (1) a method of hydrocracking carbonaceous material that permits convenient temperature control with minimal use of external heat sources during the heat-temperature decomposition, (2) a method of coal hydropyrolysis in which coal particles are briefly exposed to high temperature for decomposition of high-molecular-weight material followed by rapid quenching, and (3) a reactor adapted for the hydropyrolysis of carbonaceous materials at elevated temperatures and pressures. Particularly suitable for conversion of lignite and bituminous coal to liquid and gaseous products, this process cracks the coal in the presence of hydrogen or other reducing gas to provide aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons of lower molecular weight. The process is described.
