Decay instability of an inhomogeneous plasma containing turning points

The decay interaction of electromagnetic waves with ion-acoustic waves and Langmuir satellites (red and blue) in an unmagnetized inhomogeneous plasma is studied. In many cases the blue satellite leads to an absolute instability, providing a ''feedback'' to the region of resonant convective amplification. The instability thresholds and the frequency spectrum of the instabilities are derived. The variation of these properties with the ratio of the characteristic dimension of the temperature inhomogeneity to that of the plasma density is analyzed.
