A supersonic plasma stream was created by an electrical discharge generator with a storage capacity of 140 microfarads and a starting voltage of 1 kV. The plasma was expanded through a cylindrical nozzle into air under normal conditions. Holographic interferometry was used to study the shock wave generated by the stream. The interferometer, operating in a real time regime and coupled to a high-speed photorecorder, attained a space and time resolution of 0.1 cm and 1 microsecond, respectively. The interferograms showed that in the initial instant of time (less than or equal to 10 microseconds) the shock wave surface was close to the surface of an ellipsoid of rotation with a semiaxis ratio close to unity which, as the distance from the wave increases, changed over into a spherical surface with a center at the outlet of the nozzle. Figures are used to illustrate the dependence of Mach number of the shock wave on time and other results.
