Computer algorithm for selection of frequency relays for load shedding
A solution technique is described for designing a load-shedding scheme using underfrequency relays to limit the effect of system overloads and a description of each necessary design decision is included in this article. The following background discussion is included to introduce the technique. During normal operation of a power system, the total mechanical power input to the system generators is equal to the sum of the connected loads plus all real power losses. The relationship of input power to loads and losses for operation at a constant frequency is given. Shedding selected portions of load can equalize the imbalance between load and available generation to avoid a possible system collapse. Underfrequency relays distributed throughout the system can be set to detect a decline in frequency and react automatically to drop predetermined portions of load.
