Fluoride, calcium and aging in healthy and polluted fir trees (Albies alba Mill. )

Journal Article · · Fluoride; (United States)
OSTI ID:6172391

In healthy fir needles, the concentration of fluoride - like that of calcium - increases with age. A significant correlation between these two elements exists. In polluted fir needles, the accumulated fluoride has practically no effect on the level of calcium when its concentration is below 300 ..mu..g/g. On the other hand, when the amounts of fluoride exceed 500 ..mu..g/g, the calcium concentration distinctly increases in the needles, mainly in the form of its oxalate. This increase of calcium is interpreted as premature aging of the needles due to fluoride.
