Mobility control design for miscible-type waterfloods

Mobility relationships in an oil reservoir and the conditions necessary to obtain adequate mobility control in a miscible-water-flood are described in this paper. Particular treatment is given for mobility control with the Maraflood oil recovery process. In this miscible-type waterflood process, mobility control is maintained at both the leading and trailing edges of a slug of micellar solution. Procedures are given for determining the design mobility for oil-water flow from relative permeability curve and for selecting the proper displacing fluids. The slug mobility is made less than the design mobility at any frontal velocity below some selected maximum. Slug compositions are adjusted to achieve this mobility. Mobility buffer is injected immediately following the slug. The mobility of a thickened water buffer depends on polymer concentration, polymer molecular weight, water salinity, and rock type. The mobility of the buffer is made less than or equal to the slug mobility. With the injection of drive water behind the mobility buffer, water penetrates and bypasses the buffer. The volume of mobility buffer must be sufficient so that slug is not bypassed before the flood is economically completed. (16 refs.)
