Summary report of the ABMA test program to update emissions and efficiency performance of industrial stoker-fired boilers. [Tests on 18 different boiler installations]

The objective of this paper is to review the test program conducted by the American Boiler Manufacturers Association (ABMA) on industrial stoker fired boilers. It was felt that a lack of realistic emission standards was preventing the purchase and installation of stoker fired boilers in industrial plants. Tests were undertaken in 1977 and completed in 1980. The data are now available to assist consulting engineering firms and users in preparing specifications for coal-burning, stoker-fired boilers. An additional feature of these tests will be an operations manual outlining techniques for burning a range of coals effectively and efficiently and facilitate purchasing from several different suppliers. I am confident that we can design, manufacture, install and operate a coal-fired, stoker boiler with confidence that it will meet the stack emission standards set by EPA. The data have supplied the interactive effects of the many variables associated in burning coal on a stoker under a boiler. Each application, each installation will be required to meet a different set of ground rules. We need no longer try to design in the dark, to generalize, to assume factors in specifications prepared by engineers for the purchase of stoker fired boilers. Time will determine the usefulness of this data. The manufacturer, the consulting engineers and the users will ultimately prove the value of the data. ABMA is satisfied it served industry in proposing the tests, managing the field work and directing this program. I sincerely hope the next few years will see the successful installation of many stoker-fired boilers burning more and more coal efficiently and economically to the satisfaction of more and more users.
