New approach for the development of diagnostic expert systems

A new expert system shell suitable for the development of diagnostic expert systems is presented. This shell is based on an approach that allows a rapid systematic knowledge acquisition. Besides, it incorporates not only empirical observations of the expert diagnostician, but also knowledge about the structure and function of the device under study in order to generate optimal diagnosis strategies. These diagnostic strategies are generated off-line; thus, a substantial part of the on-line search time required to solve diagnostic problems is eliminated. This shell enables users, even those unfamiliar with artificial intelligence, to easily implement an expert diagnostic system. Initial tests of the shell indicate that it can be successfully used as a tool for the development of diagnostic expert systems; especially for complex systems such as nuclear power stations.
