Metalloporphyrins and trace metals as geochemical indicators for petroleum heavy ends

Conference · · Am. Chem. Soc., Div. Pet. Chem., Prepr.; (United States)

Of the various trace metals in petroleum, vanadium and nickel are the most abundant. Heavy ends of 3 oil samples from different fields were used. They were each fractionated into their maltene and asphaltene components on the basis of their hexane solubility. The porphyrins were isolated from the oil fractions by liquid chromatography of ethanolic extracts on activated silica gel. The fractions were eluted with hexane-benzene and chloroform benzene and the visible spectra and more reliable absorption spectra were measured. The total vanadium and nickel content of the maltenes and asphaltenes was measured in methyl isobutyl ketone-xylene solutions at 318.5 and 235 nm resonance lines by absorption spectroscopy. The result on the total trace metal content indicates that the vanadium/nickel index of 3.52 of the asphaltenes is reliable and comparable with the crude oil. The higher accuracy of the isolated measurements of the metal porphyrin content produced more acceptable proportions of porphyrinic metals, and is in support of the measured vanadium/nickel index. 3 tables.
