Environmental isotopes were used to investigate the origin and age of the thermal waters and estimate the subsurface temperatures of the Mt. Meager, B.C. geothermal system. Water samples were collected at all accessible discharges of thermal and cold waters, from runoff and from precipitation and analyzed for /sup 18/O, /sup 2/H, /sup 3/H, /sup 13/C, /sup 14/C, and /sup 34/S concentrations in water, dissolved carbon, hydrothermal calcites and dissolved sulfate. The delta/sup 18/O - delta/sup 2/H data identifies separate reservoirs for the two major thermal water discharges in the area, each with a different recharge area. Both discharges exhibit some degree of exchange of /sup 18/O with hot reservoir rocks. Tritium contents indicate that they have recharged prior to 1953. Subsurface temperature estimates using the SO/sub 4/-H/sub 2/O isotope and the Mg-corrected Na-K-Ca chemical geothermometers were less than 150/sup 0/C and averaged less than 100/sup 0/C indicative of a shallow rather than a deeply circulating geothermal system.
