Dark matter in spiral galaxies. II. Galaxies with H I rotation curves
Luminosity profiles and rotation curves for 16 galaxies are analyzed in order to study the light and mass distribution in each galaxy. Bulge/disk decompositions are discussed. It is observed that the ratio of the individual peak rotation velocities from halo and stellar components varies significantly among galaxies, and the ratio correlates with galaxy luminosity and/or morphological types. The rotation curves are also examined using Milgrom's (1983) modification of Newtonian dynamics. The data reveal that the calculated rotation curves correlate adequately with observed curves; however, the derived value for the critical acceleration varies by a factor of 5 between galaxies and a slightly declining rotation curve is predicted for most galaxies not always seen. 48 references.
