Title: LMFBR aerosol release and transport program. Quarterly progress report, October--December 1978

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6166915

This report summarizes progress for the Liquid-Metal Fast Breeder Reactor (LMFBR) Aerosol Release and Transport (ART) Program sponsored by the Division of Reactor Safety Research of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for the period October--December 1978. This program is designed to investigate radionuclide release and transport from LMFBRs for reactor events of severity up to and including hypothetical core-disruptive accidents (HCDAs). Program topics discussed include recent capacitor discharge vaporization (CDV) tests in the Fuel Aerosol Simulant Test (FAST)/Containment Research Installation (CRI-III) facility, including underwater and argon tests in the CRI-III vessel; sodium spray fire experiments in the Nuclear Safety Pilot Plant (NSPP); results from U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ aerosol tests in CRI-II using the dc plasma metal--oxygen torch, and development and testing of the dc plasma metal--oxygen torch for NSPP; and a parametric study of heat and mass transfer mechanisms for a UO/sub 2/ bubble rising in sodium.
