Heavy metal toxicity to crops grown in sewage sludge amended soil

Journal Article · · Agron. Abstr.; (United States)

A number of crop species were grown on Evesboro loamy sand amended with 5% peat, 5% digested sewage sludge, or Zn (186 mg/kg) + Cu (66 mg/kg) equivalent to that added with sludge, each at pH 5.5 and 6.5. Plants grown on the sludge or metal amended soil were chlorotic and/or stunted. Tomato varieties used as indicator plants showed these symptoms resulted from B, Zn, and Cu toxicities and revealed lethal interactions between them. These toxicities were pH dependent and were expressed more strongly on low C.E.C. soils. Differences in varietal tolerance to metal excess was observed in several species. A rapid pH lowering of sludge-soil mixtures occurred after an initial short-term pH rise. Heavy metal toxicity was always more severe at lower pH. The pronounced effect of pH on corn and chard uptake of metals was not reflected by chelate extraction of the soils.
