Second law analysis of cogenerating plants

Thesis/Dissertation ·

A general formulation was developed, based on second law concepts, to assess the merits of industrial plants characterized by any number of useful output streams. The formulation, called the cost effectiveness equation, establishes a figure of merit of the proposed plant configuration, the specific plant operating cost, which is a function of the plant output and of its second law efficiency. The optimization of the plant configuration is then achieved by minimizing the plant specific operating cost, thus identifying the optimum values of the output and seocnd law efficiency of the proposed configuration. The cost effectiveness equation technique is applied to cogenerating plants with one and two outputs such as power generating stations, boilers for process steam and cogenerating facilities. Application of the modeling technique to power generating stations served as a test case to verify its accuracy by reproducing well established results. Application to steam generators is used as a building block to approach the case of cogenerating facilities. The application of the cost effectiveness equation technique to cogenerating facilities shows that a design point, characterized by a minimum value of the plant total specific operating cost can be found for the types of plants considered. A procedure is developed to test the sensitivity of a specific plant configuration to changes in load or to a specific load diagram. The procedure uses an algorithm known as bin method along with the cost effectiveness equation to evaluate the plant figure of merit.
