Egypt has maintained greater exploration and general development activity levels than most countries in the Middle East. The government's desire for new fields to sustain production has helped support activity. In the first four months of this year, output averaged almost 890,000 b/d. For the fiscal year from July, 1987 through June, 1988, average production is forecast at 870,000 b/d. New permits have been made available to stimulate exploration by foreign companies and a clutch of new discoveries in the Western Desert has helped maintain interest. Development in the Western Desert has been held back by the crude oil transportation difficulties. But in the past year, two new pipelines to El Hamra terminal on the Mediterranean coast have been commissioned. This article reviews the technical details concerning these pipelines.
