Title: Isomerization: An answer to the lead phase-down

Increasing the severity of the cat reformer is always the refiner's first line of defense when faced with an octane shortage. Overall, cat reforming averages about 35 /ONB in today's market. The incremental cost of running an existing reformer at higher severities may be lower than this if the unit is not pushed hard. Therefore, once refiners have pushed reforming severity to a reasonable limit, light naphtha isomerization based on up-to-date technology is the least expensive route to extra octane. The economics are especially attractive when idle equipment is available for conversion. Since virtually all refineries have LSRN, this approach is available to everyone. If even more octane is desired, the LSRN can be supplemented with natural gasoline, light reformate, light pyrolysis gasoline, light hydrocrackate, or other C/sub 5//C/sub 6/ streams.
